  • Condition: This is a staple bound booklet. Staples are holding well. The booklet was, at one time, folded in half, lengthwise or vertically. This has left a crease in the front cover (see photo #1) which, nevertheless, still lies flat now. The remainder of the pages have a slight impression of the previous fold but no creases. On one page, there are three words printed in ink, in English (see photo #3) There is no other writing. The overall condition is pretty nice. Please see photos. Sold as is.

    Up for sale is a vintage (1960s) booklet issued by the Prefecture of Fukuoka promoting travel to the island of Kyushu, in Japan.  This booklet has many great photos and several maps.  The text is in English, but clearly was composed by someone not fluent in the language, presumably by a Japanese writer.  This is an unusual item!

    Date:  None found.  Date of 1960s is inferred from information in the brochure (e.g. that the Nikkatsu Hotel in Hakata was "the newest and finest hotel in West Japan" and that the Nagasaki Peace Monument and International Culture Hall were "newly constructed").  In addition, this booklet was found in an estate next to personal items relating to a trip to Japan in the 1960s.
    The booklet measures 10 inches tall by slightly over 7 inches wide.  The pages are not numbered but I count 32 pages, plus the covers.
    Kyushu is the third largest island of Japan and the most westerly of Japan's four largest islands.  It is quite mountainous and boasts some great national parks, which are the subjects of a number of pages in this booklet.  Fukuoka Prefecture contains the two largest cities on Kyushu:  Fukuoka and Kitakyushu.  The island also contains Nagasaki, the city which was targeted by the second atomic (plutonium) bomb at the end of World War II.  Kyushu may have been a little "off the beaten path" for the average tourist to Japan.  This booklet brings to the reader's attention many of the unique aspects of the island in an effort to convince him/her to include Kyushu in a Japanese vacation.
