    Description

    Mask measures approximately 18 inches long, 10 1/2 inches wide and 16 1/2 inches deep to tip of nose.
    Mask weighs an impressive 8 lbs 3 oz.
    Overall GOOD condition for its age.
    Beautiful hand carved wooden Tengu deity / mythological creature / goblin ceremonial mask.
    This ceremonial mask has rich history in Japanese culture and folklore.
    Original painted surface shows wear, flaking, and areas of loss.  Dominant paint color is a rich brown color with gold and black accents.
    Mask appears to have been made from two pieces of wood.  A slight line and paint loss can be noted where nose meets face.
    Very unique extra long phallic-shaped nose protrudes approximately 12 inches from the carved face.
    Surface wear noted consistent with its age.

    No makers marks are noted, but based off of our research and the mask’s quality of craftsmanship, we believe it was made in the mid to late 1800’s.
    Wire attached to mask is a later addition to allow it to be used as a wall hanging.
