Description
What you are bidding on is the Congressional Seal that hung in Congressman Oliver E. Meadows office for 20 years. This item is around 65 years old. Absolutely incredible piece of political memorabilia that I’ve come across. These usually remain in the family. They decided to let it go. The chest of the eagle has a bit of color loss. The crack that is shown does not go all the way thru. It’s more surface than anything. It might be made of plaster. Any comments would be appreciated. Also you will see a picture of this item hung in his house during the estate sale. It does have a couple nick’s on the back side of the rim. Please look at the pictures. These things are very minor and do not take away from this beautiful seal. Please ask any and all questions. Please look at the other items from this estate. Buyer to pay shipping. This item is very heavy and I think weighs 60 plus pounds. It will have to be professionally packed. This seal is about 28 inches in circumference. I wouldn’t mind meeting. Again don’t miss out on this item. If you collect political memorabilia this item is for you.More about Congressman Meadows
This item is from the estate of former Congressman Oliver E. Meadows. Congressman Meadows graduated from Texas A&M University in 1942. He served with distinction as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was wounded in combat and was awarded with the Purple Heart. He retired, as a result of combat wounds, at the rank of Captain in 1947, and immediately began an illustrious career working on behalf of veterans. Meadows served as deputy director of the Texas State Approval Agency, administering veterans' education and training programs from 1947 to 1951, before moving to Washington, D.C., to become staff director of the Select Committee to Investigate Veterans' Programs - in education, training and housing. He served on several committees and subcommittees, until becoming a minority staff member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee in 1954. He was promoted to staff director in 1955 and served in that position until his retirement in 1976. An expert in veteran’s legislation, he helped enact important veteran’s laws, which are his legacy to the nation. "Oliver Meadows was a proud Texan possessed of a good nature, a better sense of humor and the keenest mind I have ever encountered on veterans' legislation," National Adjutant Arthur H. Wilson said. "Among his many achievements, his legislative career included work that led to the passage of the Korean GI Bill and the War Orphans Assistance act, and development of the Servicemen's Group Life Insurance (SGLI) Program. “Just as veterans and their families will long continue to benefit from Oliver's lifelong efforts on their behalf, we shall long remember our friend and comrade, Oliver Meadows." From 1977-1978, he was honored with the post of National Commander of the Disabled American Veterans. Congressman Meadows was born June 29th 1921 and passed April 26th 2005. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
