CAMP BUTLER NATIONAL CEMETERY is located east of Springfield, Illinois in Sangamon County near Riverton. Established in 1861 for the training of twenty-three regiments of soldiers. In just a short time with very little training .these troops would sent to serve in the Civil War front lines. The camp became a prisoner of war camp and a cemetery in 1862.
