    Description

Offered for sale is a fine hand-carved hinoki cypress wood Ko-omote mask. It is tentatively dated post-1940 and is possibly older. The mask is unmarked. Traditionally, Ko-omote masks are the first masks to be carved by apprentice carvers. Despite their relative simplicity, they are also one of the most difficult to create and carvers who have attained mastery frequently return to carving them. A Ko-omote mask is worn by a Noh actor to portray a young female character who is either a mortal or an immortal being. The main feeling conveyed by the actor in this role is that of innocent beauty.
The mask is in overall good condition. There are age-related light stains and very light craquelure. There is a small loss of the surface finishes on the bottom edge of the mask (please see photograph number six).
    The mask measures 5 1/4" by 8 3/8" by approximately 2 1/2".
